Is an Online College Degree Right for You?

Online colleges offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degrees. As prospective students explore these online options, there are also benefits and drawbacks to consider.

Experts say the quality of an education from a reputable online college is, in many cases, just as high as one pursued in person, and that online learning offers the ability to communicate with a professor and other students through technology. Enrollment in online courses has grown each year for more than a decade.

And since many universities have embraced the flexible online format, more employers are taking these degrees – and other online credentials, like graduate certificates – seriously, experts say. It’s important, they note, to check if a degree program is accredited before enrolling to make sure that it’s legitimate; having regional accreditation will also increase the likelihood that any earned credits will be accepted at other accredited universities.

People interested in getting an online college degree, especially working adults looking to go back to school, should consider the flexibility of online learning given their responsibilities outside the classroom. Those with full-time jobs and families might find a part-time online degree program ideal, enabling them to juggle their various daily responsibilities without having to commute to a physical campus.

In many online degree programs, students can access course material on their own time and in a location of their choice, regardless of their distance from a university. In others, students might attend live lectures through videoconferencing. Some programs have both. How long it takes an online learner to finish a degree program varies depending on the structure of a program’s academic calendar and the number of classes a student takes each term.

Prospective online college students should be aware that tuition for an online programisn’t always less expensive than an on-campus one – and federal financial aid may be available for those who take enough credits. And like at traditional colleges, admissions requirements differ for each program.

Online learning also has its downsides, and not every subject is suited for online education, though even some surprising fields like fine arts are starting to embrace it. Prospective students should be on the lookout for scams; in addition to checking whethera program has accreditation, they should research university faculty and support services at colleges where they plan to apply, such as the ability to interact with advisers virtually.

Pursuing an online degree requires more personal responsibility from students as they learn material and complete assignments and group work based on their own schedule. Online learners therefore need to be prepared to effectively manage their time. And though communication with instructors and students is possible through electronic means, prospective students should weigh whether they want to sacrifice face-to-face interaction for the flexibility online education provides.

Ultimately, experts say, students should choose an online degree program wisely, keeping in mind the impact it can have on a career.

Top 10 Best Online Colleges

Your Guide to the Best Online Colleges

Get to know the best online colleges!

Getting a degree can be time-consuming. No matter what degree level, whether it’s an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate, it can be hard for anyone who works full-time to carve out three or four consecutive hours a day, multiple days a week, to attend classes at a traditional brick-and-mortar college. Luckily, you can now complete college online.

That’s where the Best Online Colleges come into play.

Many colleges offer programs in which students can earn their degrees online while still paying the mortgage or simply putting groceries in their refrigerator. These schools were considered for this ranking of the best online colleges.

Methodology for the Top 100 Best Online Colleges of 2018

In developing the ranking for the 100 Best Online Colleges, several pieces of data were collected in order to evaluate the institutions. A list of all colleges offering online degrees or courses was obtained from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) and Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). In addition, data and information for online colleges and universities considered for this college ranking was obtained from Payscale, CollegeData, Niche, and individual school websites.
Statistics used in the ranking are as follows:

Freshman Satisfaction or Retention Rate

Graduation Rate

Average Net Price of Attendance (Residential)

Overall Grade from Niche

Mid-Career Average Annual Pay

For Freshman Satisfaction or Retention Rate and 6-year Graduation Rates, the % sign was dropped for the ease of scoring. For example, a Graduation or Freshman Satisfaction rate of 65% would become simply 65. All numbers are whole numbers with no decimals provided from NCES. These statistics provide valuable insight into the overall quality of education provided by these online schools.

The Average Net Price of Attendance is converted to an Affordability Factor using our formula shown in the chart on the right. Schools with the lowest in-state COA are given the highest numbers for their affordability. For many students, affordability of a college degree is a huge factor. Taking on great amounts of debt in order to pursue their career is often not part of their future plan. Finding an affordable online college is a priority.

Financial aid for online students and online college scholarships are available.

For the Overall Grade supplied by Niche, we use these grades which are then converted to a numerical scale so that they can be added together with the other values for an overall ranking score. The scale used is illustrated on the right. We find this statistic valuable as it allows students who have attended the institution a chance to voice their opinion.

Payscale provides the valuable statistic of Mid-Career Pay. For our purposes, this number is rounded either up or down to the nearest thousand in order to allow for an easier mathematical ranking formula. While pursuing a career that they are passionate about is important for students, it’s never a bad idea to find out which schools have the largest average pay to go along with that career.

In cases where accredited online colleges and universities were tied for the same ranking score, alphabetical order was used as the tie-breaker. All online schools in the ranking are excellent choices and ranking scores are disclosed so that anyone is able to see where tie scores occurred.

None of the institutions in this ranking or any other ranking on OnlineCollegePlan have been given any preferential treatment, nor have any requests for such been received. Schools included in this ranking are either public or private not-for-profit institutions. In some cases, insufficient data may have caused an institution to be excluded. Efforts were made to ensure that methodology was fully disclosed so that anyone who desires can recreate an identical ranking using the data and figures present at the time of research. OnlineCollegePlan is not responsible for changes in data which may occur after the time of our research.

College degrees typically translate into bright futures. Today, that future is even easier to come by since you can earn your college degree online. While a number of degrees are available online, five are the most popular. They include:

• Graphic design
• Engineering
• Marketing
• Medical assisting
• Web design

GRAPHIC DESIGN
Employers are interested in job candidates who have a graphic design degree. Companies need people who can create advertising campaigns, promotional displays, memorable logos and marketing brochures. Website development, product packaging and various publications also require the skills of a trained graphic designer.

To be successful in the field, you must be creative and possess the technical prowess to work with multiple computer programs. You’ll also need business skills to market yourself successfully. Plan to take courses that focus on design layouts, graphics and digital imagery. You’ll also learn about typography and the history of photography and design.

ENGINEERING
Because of the diversity of the engineering field, this type of degree is one of the most popular. If you decide to earn an engineering degree, you’ll be able to specialize in a number of areas including electrical, civil and industrial. As an engineer, you’ll be solving technical problems, developing functional designs and creating devices.

This line of work is typically high paying, and many advancement opportunities are available. Engineers work on airplanes and automobiles. Companies that manufacture smartphones and computers also need them to make their products.

If you were the kid who took apart his or her stuff to see how it worked, then this is a good career choice for you.

MARKETING
The rivalry for products and services is colossal. Because of this, most companies are competing with other local businesses for customers. In addition, the Internet has increased the business world’s globalization, which is also boosting competition.

With marketing experts on the payroll, companies can attract customers by creating effective advertising brochures and developing appealing displays. To be successful in a marketing career, focus on your social media advertising techniques and the best ways to implement search engine optimization. In the job field, you’ll be using your creativity and imagination. You’ll also need good communication skills.

MEDICAL ASSISTING
In the healthcare field, medical assistants provide clinical and administrative aid. They ready patients for exams and routine laboratory procedures. Medical assistants also take patient histories, maintain records and complete simple procedures. They are an essential part of any healthcare facility.

Because medical assistants perform many basic functions, doctors are able to focus more fully on the needs of their patients. While studying to become a medical assistant, you’ll have the option of earning a diploma. You can also become certified. The training program will teach you how to administer injections, prevent infections and maintain a sanitary work environment.

WEB DESIGN
For companies, websites are becoming a necessity. Because of this, web design degrees are one of the most popular educational options. Businesses need web designers to create sites that will attract new customers while delivering helpful information. Many of today’s companies use this tool to sell their products or services.

To ensure the effectiveness of a site, businesses usually hire web designers. People who work in the industry assess a company’s needs to develop a personalized website design. In this line of work, you’ll need to determine what should be featured on a site and how to display this information. The job field requires creativity and technological skills.

SETTING YOUR EYE ON THE FUTURE
By choosing to earn one of the five most popular online degrees, you’ll have the skills to work for various companies in most of today’s top industries. An online degree will show your potential employers that your career is important to you.

FINANCING YOUR AFFORDABLE ONLINE GRADUATE DEGREE
When financing higher education. your first order of business should always be to check FAFSA for information. This is the primary government organization responsible for funding higher education, and all of the best widely available grants and loans are available through them. Normally after your FAFSA aid you would rely on institutional scholarships and grants, as well as private loans. But between the affordability of these graduate degrees and the aid from FAFSA, it’s likely you will be able to pay the rest out of pocket if you’re working while in the program. Another option for those who don’t want to work while they earn the degree is to take out enough financial aid to cover the cost of the degree and your cost of living while you earn the degree.

EARNINGS DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE DEGREES
According to Pew Research, the value of all higher education has been steadily increasing since 1984 even after adjusting for inflation. Bachelor’s degrees have increased in value by 13%, master’s degrees by 23%, and doctorates and professional degrees by 34%. These increases start out small in the beginning of a career because everybody is making entry-level money. But mid-career and late-career the differences in earnings grow significantly. More details can be found at Pew Research.

WHY EARN A CHEAP GRADUATE DEGREE ONLINE?
Much is made of getting a degree from a “good school”. Most of the time “good school” means schools with good reputations. Schools that, just the name of the institution will open doors for you. And that’s not a bad strategy, but those schools aren’t accessible to everybody. And based on your needs, that kind of reputation might not be all that helpful to you. For instance, most public and private school teachers tend to get paid the same wages whether they earned their graduate degree from Harvard or their local state university. If you’re a small business owner or aspiring entrepreneur, maybe you just want the degree for practical reasons, not to impress anybody. Maybe you didn’t have the grades in college and don’t have the money now to afford more expensive degrees. That’s OK. There are plenty of affordable options where you can learn what you need to succeed in the future. There are many quality schools to choose from in our ranking, including main-campus state universities, and our top-ranked Georgia Tech, which is one of the top STEM schools in the United States. Your education doesn’t have to be expensive to be good or valuable.

CHEAP ONLINE COLLEGES: 10 BEST VALUES

In this ranking, we examine the best values among cheap online colleges.

One of the reasons people often choose to attend college online is because it is a more affordable option than traditional school. You can save money by living at home, avoiding lengthy – and sometimes costly – commutes, and opting for cost-effective e-textbooks and online modules over traditional resources. That being said, not all online colleges are created equal, and many are hiking tuition rates as distance education becomes more mainstream. So if you’re living on a budget, what are your options? For starters, see below for our list of the 10 cheapest online colleges.

10. NATIONAL PARALEGAL COLLEGE
National Paralegal College’s affordable tuition rates aren’t the only reason this school is one of the best cheap online colleges. National Paralegal College also provides all textbooks for 100-level courses through its “custom-developed online courseware,” thus saving you an extra financial burden when you first start the program. You can also earn credits for past general education and paralegal courses, so you’ll only pay for exactly the education you need. Veterans are especially likely to agree that NPC offers some of the best, cheapest degrees online thanks to special military tuition assistance programs.

*For this ranking, we deviated slightly from the standard methodology. Because the focus was exclusively on cost, we only considered schools with tuition rates below $20,000 a year. After narrowing our list, we then used data from College Navigator to pick those with the lowest net price. However, we did not use graduation rates in the methodology in order to maintain a strict focus on affordability.
